I think they say french just for the sake of the ease of communication. If we called each island it's own separate language we'd be here all day. Even as a creole speaker, Id argue Haití speaks French officially. But in the Same way Jamaica and the british isles speak english. The language of Jamaica Is Jamaican Creole English (patois). They Still speak English. The language of Martinique and Guadeloupe Is French Creole. But they all speak French because it's their language of Business and Global contact. Speak to the average (born) Hatian in french and they will understand. Same how in Jamaica you could speak standard english and they Will respond to you in english. That being said, Haití Is probably the only country where you could go to a Job Interview (even jobs of high prominence) and speak the creole. That much Is very admirable. I'm just imagining even a Jamaican job interview to be a lawyer and them speaking english creole. "so a wah u a come ya fa? U look a wurrk inna fi we law firm? 🤣"

Spanish is taught in secondary schools because T&T was once colonized by Spain. Trinidad was once controlled from Venezuela by a Governor from spain because Trinidad was far from Spain and it took some time for the Governors to get to Trinidad, the most well known being Don Marie Chacon, as in Chacon Street, Port of Spain as it was then called 'Porto d'Espana' Conquerors always teach their languages. It is their way of branding their possessions. The French planters came to Trinidad after Spain granted the 'Cedula' granting french planters to come to Trinidad because they felt the slave population might overwhelm the whites. The french brought their slaves, language, culture. It is from this we leaned that 'patios' was broken french and so it was thought that the word patois was only considered to be broken french. However, the word patois is a french word meaning broken language, and not necessarily only related to the french language. Oh! and the Spainish taught in the secondary schools, were all uniformed at least in my day when we had to Oral and written spanish to be corrected in England. French was also taught uniformly as like spanish there was a syllabus. French exams finals were oral, aural and written french to be corrected in England. Perhaps now it is all different, but spanish taught in schools did not come from refugee venezuelans.

I am 72 and I left high school in 1969 and did both Spanish and French for O'Levels. My sister is 80 and she did spanish in high school. Spanish was taught in Trinidad as I said since colonization and not because of recent asylum seekers.

And you are right . Our English is par excellent. I still remember our professors being amazed at our speaking and writing english language skills way back in the 80's and in 70's, my older sister and brothers at UNI. They assumed because we we were black we did not know english. Same crap on the job. But that is for another day, another time.

I disagree with you although I understand why you make this point. The countries and areas you named have a significant population of African descendants however their CULTURE is not Caribbean. They have a culture that is HEAVILY influenced by their Spanish colonizers hence the term "Latin American countries" despite their respective geographic locations. I am a Garifuna Belizean and grew up across the road from the Caribbean Sea. 2 of my great grandmothers are Garifuna from Guatemala and 2 great grandfathers are Garifuna from Honduras. They moved to Belize and were the early settlers of Dangriga,Belize. Due to British colonialism the CULTURE of Belize is definitely Caribbean. It is evident in our food, language, dialects, music and shared history with the Caribbean. For this reason other countries in Central America do not accept us as "Latin American" just as Guyana is not considered "Latin American". I have been to most of the countries you named; have family in Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and grew up with plenty Panamanians in Brooklyn, NY. ALL the countries you named are culturally SPANISH as well as Cuba, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico despite their geographical location in the "West Indies" which often leads to them being grouped in as Caribbean. Panama is a little complex due to the men that went to work there on the Panama Canal from other countries (including one of my great grandfathers from Honduras) many of them primarily came from Jamaica and Barbados which many modern day Afro- Panamanians can trace their heritage to. However their CULTURE is heavily Spanish influenced as well. But those countries you listed do have a significant Afro Latino and Latina population which should definitely be recognized, highlighted and celebrated.

If you've been to these Places you'd see how caribbean they are at the first sight, from culture to music to shared history. Even If you want to argue languges, english creole Is widely spoken in the black parts or honduras, Bay Islands, Nicaragua, Bay Islands, costa rica and Panamá. English creole Is even spoken in the afro _region del caribe_ of colombia aka North colombia. But this Isnt about English, it's about culture. if your _qualifier_ Is whether or not they speak english or have british influence, then you have to say Haití and Martinique and FG and suriname Guadeloupe are not "caribbean." In fact, they _TECHNICALLY_ Fit the criteria to be latín American or latino. If you say Places like Haití and Martinique are not caribbean, you have to decide whether or not Trinidad, Grenada, ST Lucia, Dominica, are not caribbean Because the first language of these Islands Is patois (french creole). But then you have to decide whether or not East Venezuela isn't caribbean, Because they speak the same english creoles as the Trinidadians, and the same french creoles. And even have their Own separate carnival from Venezuela to stay true to their caribbean roots. They just dont have an oficial country Because they are tied to Venezuela. But they are culturally Caribbean. Central América Is both geographically and culturally Caribbean. The food? _Sopa de res_ Is literally mannish water. _horchata_ Is the same thing as rice tea, the rhythms of punta would have been Taken from the rhythms of the East caribbean where the black Garinagu (what we from the East caribbean call Kalinagu or sometimes the neg mawon) did what we still do to this day. Dame rhythms, the same native language (slightly changed now due to distance) and same customs. Everything Is there. You can't divide it Soley based on "british or not british" Because many of these territories changed hands reppeatedly. Hell, how Is it that Trinidadians have so much french culture and french dialects Yet it was owned by the spanish? And british.? Because the culture can be found beyond the language.

@@josephwinslow7613 that's not the point at hand. I never said country, i said culture. The point Is there are many Caribbean Cultures that we leave out. And when you do that you erase a Lot of caribbean history and culture which Is already intentionally hidden by latín American society.

But Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana have very close historical ties to the Caribbean so most of the people in those countries and people in the Caribbean consider them as such despite the geography, which is understood. It’s like the Canary Islands being considered part of Europe though they are geographically African.

Hey having close tise with the Caribbean Islands does not make you Caribbean they are south American countrys not Caribbean you just need to get your facts right

The funny thing is, Guyana plays cricket on the West Indies and has more in common with most of the Caribbean than some English speaking Caribbean islands.

Being "Caribbean" does not only mean where you're from. Being "Caribbean" has a whole lot to do with culture, history, language and whole host of things and geographical location is a part of it. Guyana and Belize are 100% Caribbean as any other "Caribbean" island. It goes beyond geographical location.
